Man’s inhumanity continues . . .

As the Charlottesville incident is still fresh in our minds,I have to ask myself, Why?

First, why is there such a visceral reaction in me to this senseless violence , and second, what is it in me that creates a space that allows this to happen?

To the first, I just can’t understand what it is in people that brings them to such a place of loss that they see no other option than to do harm to another child of God. Where is the thought process that says this is an acceptable solution? In this country especially, where the standard of living, even for the poor and disadvantaged is so much higher than so much of the world, there is still a disconnect so deep that people would rather listen to others opinions, rather than discern any truth for themselves. Even self-proclaimed Christians seem to abandon the teaching of the man around whom the religion was born to resort inane acts, so out of character with their savior. Instead, they engage in hate mongering, acts of violence, discrimination, and other base acts of horror, in the name of religion.alan-paton-novelist-quote-there-is-only-one-way-in-which-one-can

Today, this is stretched to a breaking point by an ignorant, misogynistic and arrogant @POTUS and a militant, violence spouting media, that seems to have lost perspective as to their job of delivering the facts and instead incites discontent. This is not limited to the so-called alt-right. All the unknowing media is contributing to this base rhetoric of hate. Their opinions become the opinions of the unread, and self-absorbed everywhere and their untruths become rallying cries.

To the “What;” what can we do to alleviate suffering and maybe encourage a new and more loving behavior going forward?

To this, I can only speak for me. I can look inward to what it is in me that creates this reaction in the first place. I can look at my own thoughts of bigotry and hatred, however benign or repressed they might be. They must be there for me to react in the ways I do. I need to not only look at them, but I need to be aware that they are obviously somewhere in me, and in my awareness of them, do a healing process to bring them into my consciousness, so I can begin to release these thoughts.

In the Christian faith, Jesus’ teaching bring us to recognize the God within us, which is always there to guide us toward Love. In the Muslim faith, there is the inner struggle, jihad, which is our guide to bring us into the Love of God. In Buddhism and Hinduism, there is the desire to achieve selflessness, which brings us into communion with the universe.

Whatever the teaching, they are always toward Peace, inner and other. As Thomas Merton says, without a balance of the spiritual and the human, we are incomplete, not a “Whole Person.”

What does this mean for me? It means I need to do the deeper interior work every day. I need to be in greater awareness of all the exterior things that “effect” me, and I need to remember the Spirit moves in, through and as every living thing, always. If I can remember and live these principles, then I can remain in tune with the infinite, and I tune with Love, which God is, and I AM.

“To forget the self and its pettiness is to actually show up, open and embracing, in the present moment’s play of form and formlessness.

Eliminate the Negative

no-manHave you ever noticed how, when you’re in a group talking, there always seems to be someone who just has nothing constructive to say and they tend to dominate the conversation with oftentimes unrelated trivial drivel? They tend to drive a wedge into a discussion that causes the group to disburse unless they are gently brought back to the light side!

The unfortunate thing is, they don’t realize how much their attitude reflects how their life unfolds. When you think that the world is a dangerous place or your life sucks, what do you get? You get a dangerous world and a life that sucks.

You can change that outcome by changing the way you look at things.

Take charge of your life

The-path-you-chooseImagine if today you could start your life all over again and you knew everything you did today. What would you do given the circumstances of your former life, and all you knew that happened then? Would you start by taking your own advice, that advise that’s like a voice from within you? Or, would you listen to everyone around you who may be struggling, working hard and getting nowhere and think that is the way of it?

We have choices we make in every moment in which we are either responsible for every change we make or we give that power to someone else. If we listen to the thoughts of others instead of following our own advice, then we leave ourselves at the effect of external circumstances. If we take responsibility for our actions and our life going forward, then we can choose our direction, and even have a clue as to where to steer our course, if our initial one doesn’t work for us. Remember, attitude does play an important role in our changes. Whether you think you will fail or succeed, you are right!

World Peace

1305249Where does “Peace” begin? Many seem to think it begins with one country abdicating some of its power to another country or one faction within a country agreeing to ceasing hostilities with the other side.

This is so far from the truth. Why? Because in order to have peace anywhere, the way we look at each other has to change at a fundamental and individual level! In order for that to happen, I must not only change how I look at others, I must change how I look at myself.

If I don’t love me, how can I love another? If I do love myself, then I can find a way to love another. I can accept them for their differences and even embrace them for their differences.

Everywhere, nowhere, and now here

nowhereFunny, I first heard the “No where-Now here” phrase shared by Dr. Wayne Dyer in one of his NPR shows for one of his books years ago. He was referencing the nature of God or the universal force behind all things. I guess I’ve never been into anagrams, but I find it telling yet incomplete.

God is, as most define It, everywhere present. God is the unseen(nowhere)behind all things, the divine impulse that powers the universe and everything in it. It goes from being the “nowhere” to the “now here” by our prayers and affirmations for things to change in the life of the faith filled through prayer and affirmations.

What seems to be left out is that God, being everywhere present, all the time, is always in our lives, every minute of every day. As a constant presence, we have the opportunity to “practice the presence” very minute of every day and, in fact, do without even realizing it.

Why do you think our lives can be in such turmoil because our thoughts are so chaotic so much of the time? Could it be because we are in denial about the way things are in our lives? Could we embrace the place where we are in the present moment, and begin to change how it looks from that place? Or, are we happy with the stories we have made up for ourselves casting the blame on someone else for our unfolding unhappiness?

If there is some unhappiness in our lives, we must step up and take responsibility for our own complicity in its unfolding. Once we are able to do that, we have the potentiality of changing what isn’t working for us and growing from the realization of it.

If we have a thought that we desire a better job and walk out of the interview saying, “I’ll never get that job” or “I don’t deserve it,” we probably won’t get it.

Why? Because we are always connected to the Divine Source. Remember? It is everywhere present! Whether we call It a vibration, an impulse, the Breath, Source Energy, God or whatever, we become out of sync with our self. That’s the short of it, you know.

So, stay in sync with you. Remember, not only is your life unfolding from that which is “Everywhere, nowhere and nowhere,” but it unfolds “Always” and “in All Ways!”

Peace in the midst of it all.

1887638Peace is an inner thing, a feeling, and a knowing that, above all else, you are alright.

Beyond that, to me, Peace is the inner knowing that I am loved. That, above all else, there is something in me, call it a life force, that is eternal and will live on for longer than I can ever imagine.

I know and feel this, because even our bodies don’t cease to be. Their form changes back to the basic elements, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, but it doesn’t just disappear and evaporate into nothing. And our soul, or consciousness, becomes free and returns to the ethers. I say ethers, because until it happens, it is the unknown. I don’t believe it is to be feared, although many do, because they don’t understand it. Their faith or trust in the universe hasn’t grown that awareness of the Oneness of all life. You can better understand by more consciously observing the natural world.

But, do not look at the natural world from an adversarial perception of life going extinct. That has been happening for millions of years. Look at it from the view of the eternal interconnectedness of life, and the constant cycle of living. Life is about living. Dying or transitioning, as some call it, is just a movement of life from one form to another.

So, if you’re open to it, embrace peace and begin to embrace life from a new understanding of the eternality of all things.
