The company we keep

burning-bridges1We often, in spiritual community, speak of being with like-minded people.

The question becomes, “what makes someone a like-minded person?”

My definition may be different from other peoples or even yours. To me, “like minded people are those I can communicate with. We don’t communicate with everyone we speak with. We may speak to some. We may talk at them. We may react to something they say, but we don’t accept them as like minded. Why? Because they don’t have anything in common with us that we can agree upon.

Why is that? Maybe we are unwilling to really “hear” their point of view or ask why they have that point of view, or even to see beyond their point of view. Another possibility is that there is some common ground, as there usually is, but we haven’t dug deeply enough to find it. Maybe they pushed a button that doesn’t allow us in the moment to see a common point. You can revisit the conversation in the privacy of your own mind after you cool off, if you don’t burn the bridge.

Or, just maybe, you have grown so much or so far apart that there is no common ground anymore. Sometimes we just outgrow another. It’s not good or bad, it just is.

So, if you’re grieving the loss of a friend, just be sure your decision is a sound one, or don’t burn your bridges. True friends are hard to find.

Self-Love or Narcissism

clip_image002

“If I asked you to name all the things that you love, how long would it take to name yourself?”

A Facebook friend recently responded about post image about self-love that she was afraid it sounded narcissistic if she stated that. I guess my direct comment would be, “yes, it would, if you would go around declaring that to everyone,” but what I feel is that self-love is the basis for loving others.

Narcissism is total lack of love for self and others. It’s really a self-loathing that out-pictures as, “It’s all about me” and what “I” do, and nothing about you. The individual is trying to convince themselves that they are a loving person and deserving of Love, because no one does. They usually believe that money, fame, notoriety, bombastic behavior, which always draws attention, are the behaviors that not only draw people to them, but also make people love them.

People are drawn to that type of behavior today, or at least it seems so. That’s most of what you see on the internet and the news, because it sells, and attracts “likes.” There are also other things that can attract “likes” beyond outrageous behavior and cat videos, Loving thoughts.

They’re not good press though. That’s why there is little success with websites about good news or loving thoughts, or at least less sharing of those sites.

Remember, Hate only begets more hate, but when you respond to hate with love it becomes disarmed. So, if you find yourself in the presence of outrageous behavior from someone, just send them love. You don’t need to embrace them with anything more than your mind, if you don’t feel inclined, but it can have a healing for you and you never know what it may do for the other person.

Love Transcends Chaos.

“Staring down Chaos, we can recognize that there is no space, no ease, no footing in it.”

-Kathleen Dowling Singh, The Grace in Aging

Chaos. What is it that creates this state in our lives? Mostly, it’s from us giving our power away. When we have lost our direction, our purpose, and start giving in to all the multitude of external and contradictory data, stories and uninformed comments, this confusing cacophony of misinformation can disorient us, if we don’t pull back from it.

We should instead, listen to that guide within us that helps us make our own, informed decisions based on an intuitive knowing from empirical data we have filtered through our own lens of life.

Living in chaos is like trying to build a house on quicksand. There is no solid footing on which to build and we constantly sink back into the mire, into the chaos. It gets down to one thing; Love.

It always seems to return to this. Love is the only thing upon which to build your life. When you love you, when you accept you with all your seeming imperfections (individualized perfections), you can weather any storm. There is nothing you can’t move beyond. You look at your life, taking responsibility for everything in it, realizing that missteps aren’t the end, but the start of a new beginning.

When Edison created the light bulb, he made thousands of missteps before he finally found the right combination of elements to give a stable platform to light the bulb reliably and consistently. Because he trusted and believed he could, he achieved it. There was no chaos to him, only a knowing that he had within himself the power to create this.

Love jumpstarts that creative process.

The Company You Keep

crowdThis is often a very touchy topic, but I wouldn’t be me, if I wasn’t willing to put my foot in my mouth. Have you ever thought about how your friends or those around you affect your life, as in your thoughts, feelings and attitudes?

If you’ve been trying to change your life and how it’s working for you, one of the things you must change is all the negativity that goes on around you. The negative thoughts and feelings that they bring into their conversations and communications arouse certain negative vibrations which keep them where they are and ultimately help to create the chaos in their lives.

As you make that move to a more peaceful, productive, and loving life, these same vibrations can create confusion and block your transformation, as you become sucked back into their vibrational field. It can and is often a difficult thing to distance yourself from these vibrations, but it really is necessary to do to attain the new vibration you wish to attract.
